Cardiff City - English?

This week on geography for beginners, the question that has been troubling explorers, cartographers and Brian Barwick for centuries: is Cardiff in Wales? Now you may think you know the answer. You may think its situation in the Welsh county of Glamorgan is a giveaway, not to mention the 11 per cent of its populace who speak Welsh and the fact it is home to the Welsh National Opera, the Welsh Assembly and the University of Wales Institute. You may feel that this evidence, though in essence circumstantial, forms an overwhelming case for the Welshness of Cardiff. And you would be right. Sort of. For while Cardiff is in Wales, it is also only too willing to get in touch with its English side on special occasions. Not least when there is a right few quid in it. If Cardiff City win the FA Cup in May, the club expect to be entered for European competition, as every FA Cup winner has been since Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1960. This seems reasonable. Cardiff have been treated as an honorary English club, much like Swansea City, Wrexham and Newport County, since their election to the second division in 1920.

However we believe that this is just another case of being English when it suits. The Welsh are evidently in favour for Independence, as can be seen by the Welsh Assembly representatives, however when there is a few bob in it for someone, they break all the rules and suddenly become English, just like Monmouthshire but backwards! The concerning thing is that, if Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham continue to play in English football, and Berwick play in Scottish football, then the case for Celtic and Rangers to play in English football becomes stronger. This would probably have government support and the Premier League could be turned into a British Premier League. There are a number of FIFA members who think that because Great Britain is a single state, it should only have one football association. As far as we’re concerned, the Welsh three should play in their own league.

Portsmouth will have to make do with the British anthem of ‘God Save the Queen’ instead of a English anthem and we hope Cardiff have too as well. Come on Pompey!

Young Free England: Olympics

Young Free England would like to show our support for the campaigners who are protesting in both London & Paris against the inhumane conditions that China are subjecting to the people of Tibet. We would like to make it clear that we believe Gordon Brown was wrong in receiveing the Olympic Torch at Downing Street and state that World Leaders should boycott this kind of welcoming ceremony and boycott the Opening Ceremony in Beijing later this year. China's record on Human Rights is appaling and the undemocratic communist regime that controls state and people should be shown what the Western world makes of this. We are not for boycotting the games, as Team GB & other national teams have worked tirelessly to succeed in Beijing, however we urge the Prime Minister and other European Leaders to put people first and boycott the Opening Ceremony.

Local Elections News: Candidate Announced

Free England are proud to announce three candidates for this year's forthcoming elections for May 1st. They are:

Richard Aitkins - Pin Green, Stevenage
Andrew Constantine - London South West - London Assembly
Martin Thompson - Fawdon, Newcastle Upon Tyne

Less than three months after our founding, we are standing in our first elections, this is a massive step forward for England and our party. We wish our candidates the very best of luck as they campaign in the first elections for Free England.

Week Ending : Friday 28th March - News Round Update

A review of Scottish devolution could mean the end of the Barnett Formula, it has been predicted this week. The formula allocates increases in public spending according to population size, regardless of relative wealth of people in Scotland, Wales and the English regions. The Scottish Labour, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, have set up a review of the present set-up, to be chaired by former Durham Univerisity Vice-Chancellor Sir Kenneth Calham. Leaders of the three parties, which all support the continied union, have said it will not consider independence. To read more of the story, follow this link.

The Prime Minister stamped his authority on devolution discussions this week, by stressing he will continue to make the case for the Union. As Des Browne, the Scottish Secretary, announces the launch of the constitutional commission set up to examine more powers for the Scottish Parliament, Gordon Brown warns that there must be " no retreat into 19th century nationalism". This week, Free England in conjunction with Young Free England announced plans to launch online broadcasts and downloadable podcasts. The online radio station will feature programmes from activists, campaigners and experienced broadcasters already presenting shows on local & regional FM stations. The station will feature topical debate, discussions and a broad range of music.
